How Bikram Yoga Helped in My Pregnancy
Megan Monroe, Instructor at the Bikram Yoga Institute
October, 2008
I practiced Bikram Yoga throughout my entire pregnancy. During the 1st trimester, I practiced 4-5 days per week. During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, I practiced 6-7 days per week. During my pregnancy, I benefited in many ways by maintaining a strong, consistent practice. I suffered very little nausea and morning sickness during the 1st trimester.

Bikram Yoga helped to reduce water retention. It helped me to maintain a comfortable body temperature, even in the summer heat of Arizona. Unlike most pregnant women, I did not suffer from any cramping or backaches. I experienced very few food cravings. My Bikram Yoga practice encouraged me to eat a well balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Yoga helped me to prepare both physically and mentally for my natural, home birth experience.
Because of my Bikram Yoga practice, I was able to stay focused on relaxation and breathing throughout labor and delivery. After ten hours of manageable contractions, Claire was born after only twenty minutes of pushing. The labor and delivery of our baby girl was a calm, empowering experience.
Overall, my pregnancy was an incredible experience because of Bikram Yoga.
Please note that I had been practicing Bikram Yoga for 4 1/2 years prior to becoming pregnant. If you are already pregnant, it is not safe to begin your Bikram Yoga practice if you have not established a consistent practice prior to pregnancy. If you are planning to get pregnant, I would recommend practicing a minimum of 4-5 times per week for at least 4-6 months, prior to becoming pregnant.
